Applicants

Who must write the exam?

All applicants to the College will be required to successfully complete the examination as part of the registration process. There are a few exceptions that will be discussed below.

Applicants with social work degrees

Applicants with social work degrees, regardless of where the degree is from, will be required to successfully complete the exam prior to being granted registration.

Applicants without social work degrees

Applicants without social work degrees already are required to complete the exam as part of the registration process.

Non-practising for more than 5 years

The College’s continuing professional development program requires that registrants who are in the non-practising class for more than 5 years are required to complete the licensure examination as part of their return to practice requirement.

Exceptions from the exam requirement

Under the provision of the Agreement on Internal Trade and other labour mobility agreements, the College cannot impose additional education or examination on an applicant who is registered in an equivalent class in another Canadian jurisdiction. That means that a person applying to the BC College who is a registered social worker with a social work degree or equivalent, may move to BC without having to meet the requirement of the examination.
