The College has received questions from registrants following the Province’s announcement regarding the regulation of psychotherapy under the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), which came into force in April 2026 and provides for the future regulation of psychotherapy as a profession effective November 29, 2027. We recognize that these developments have created uncertainty for some registrants who provide psychotherapy services and may be wondering what it means for their current practice. In response, BCCSW has issued this statement to provide clarity about what these changes mean for registered social workers (RSWs) and registered clinical social workers (RCSWs), and to confirm the continued provision of psychotherapy within the scope of social work practice under the existing regulatory framework.
