Language Proficiency

Applicants for full, clinical and provisional registration must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English to the satisfaction of the Registration Committee.

An applicant may be considered to have met the English language proficiency requirement if either of the following conditions is met:

A. Educational and Practice-Based Exemption

The applicant may be exempt from language testing if they meet any one of the following criteria:

  • Completed social work education in English in a country where English is the primary language, including field placements or practicum in settings where English was the language of service delivery;
  • Currently hold (or have held within the past two years) social work registration in a practising class in a Canadian jurisdiction where English language proficiency was a condition of registration;
  • Provide a letter from an employer confirming social work practice experience in a healthcare or community services setting where services are delivered in English;
  • Have successfully completed both primary and secondary education in English in a country where English is the primary language; or
  • Have completed advanced academic work (e.g., graduate studies, thesis, or research) in English at an accredited institution in a country where English is the primary language of instruction.

Applicants claiming an exemption under one of the above criteria must provide supporting documentation to confirm eligibility for exemption.

B. Language Proficiency Testing

Applicants who do not meet the exemption criteria above must submit valid test results from one of the following approved English language proficiency tests, meeting or exceeding the minimum required scores

Note: Results from multiple sittings cannot be combined. Only results from a single testing session meeting or exceeding all minimum scores will be accepted.

Validity of Test Results

  • All language proficiency test results must be dated within two years of the date of application.
  • Expired test results will not be accepted unless approved under exceptional circumstances by the Registration Committee.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to arrange for official test results to be submitted directly to BCCSW.
  • Incomplete, unverifiable, or outdated documentation may result in delayed or refused registration.
